Fresh on the heels of the Daring Bakers Cheesecake and oral surgery, I almost sat out this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. However, since I have been sitting in my house since last Wednesday…boredom got the best of me! I cannot explain the monotony that I have endured due to a swollen face which at the present moment is somewhat reminiscent of Octo-Mom. Since its back to work tomorrow and no more pain pills, I figured I would take advantage of my last day off and do something to occupy my time and maybe cure my listlessness. I did cut the recipe in half and made a smaller tart because there is still a cheesecake staring me in the puffy face each time I open the refrigerator door.
This week’s recipe for Dorie’s Chocolate Cream Tart was chosen by Kim of Scrumptious Photography. I made the tart dough in the early morning so it had ample time to freeze. Then baked it off in the evening and assembled the rest of the components. The chocolate tart dough is super easy to make in the food processor and literally comes together in minutes. I was not a fan of the raw dough, but the cooled chocolate pastry cream was quite good especially with the tiny bit of mint extract I added. Once I cooled the pastry cream over an ice bath I plopped it into the cooled crust and set in the fridge until I was done with the whipped cream. Because I cut the recipe in half, I did not have quite enough pastry cream to fill the shell all the way, but that just left more room for the whippy stuff! Once the whipped cream was piped on, I simply garnished the tart with a mint leaf and threw on some mini chocolate chips at the last minute. Overall, we thought this dessert was mediocre, I doubt I will make it again, but I am glad I tried it!
